The Saved Treasures of Ancient Thrace from Vassil Bojkov Collection

Thrace Foundation and a big team of The State Museum of Oriental Art organized the exhibition “The Saved treasures of Ancient Thrace from Vassil Bojkov Collection”, 15.04. – 21.06. 2009 in Moscow.

This exhibition was one of the most remarkable events included in the initiative “The Bulgaria’s Year in Russia” under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation and Republic of Bulgaria in 2009. In the exhibition were displayed 212 of the most outstanding exhibits from Vassil Bojkov” Collection dated back from the beginning of the first millennium BC and until the end of 4th century. In the centre of the exhibition were the rhytons – Thracian vessels in exquisite shapes. They were actually the focus of the exhibition. Ten silver rhytons from the Collection were displayed, decorated with the fore-parts of a deer, a horse, a bully-goat and an ox.  The gold funeral masks, the Thracian ornaments, other vessels, as well as applications on horse-trappings were very impressive too.  Generally these new historical records expand our knowledge about the ancient Thracian culture and arts. The exhibits included also phialae in different shapes, size and decorations – other vessels made of gold, silver and bronze, specific of Thrace and Thracian noblemen dated back from the first millennium BC.

Being preserved in the collection, restored, published and displayed in the exhibition, these historical records are available for the expert studies on one hand and on the other hand – all people interested in the ancient history of Thrace may enjoy them. Several very representative historical records from the Thracian lands, created during the Roman age were displayed too.

A catalogue in Bulgarian and in English was issued for the exhibition. An international scientific conference on the theme: “The Thracian Gold: Myths and Reality” was organized during the exhibition.
